Tamsin started her singing career as the ‘tall’ half of cabaret duo ‘The Song and the Short and the Tall’, but found her true musical niche in the jazz world.  She has played at key London jazz venues, and the Brighton ‘Kommedia’, was featured on Jazz FM’s ‘Dinner Jazz’ (“one of London’s fine young jazz singers”), and returns this summer for a fifth consecutive appearance at the Marlborough Jazz Festival on Saturday 12th July.

She has studied with leading British jazz singers such as Liane Carroll, Anton Brown, Pete Churchill and Shireen Francis, and is a graduate of Mary King’s performance course ‘The Knack’ at English National Opera.  She has played with some of the UK’s finest jazz musicians, including pianists Geoff Castle, Barry Green, and Nick Weldon; bassists Tim Wells, Jeff Clyne and Simon Thorpe; and drummers Clark Tracey, Paul Cavacuitti and David Ohm.  As well as playing gigs at key London jazz venues such as the Spice of Life, Pizza on the Park, The Bull’s Head and the Battersea Barge, she also does corporate events, weddings, private functions etc.

Tamsin belongs at the lighter end of the jazz spectrum.  Singers she particularly admires include Peggy Lee, June Christy, Anita O’Day, Cleo Laine, Louis Armstrong, Oscar Brown Junior, Frank Sinatra and Chet Baker.  While she enjoys singing the gold standards, she also has an active interest in reviving lost or forgotten songs.  Being a wordsmith herself, she is as likely to be attracted by the lyrics of a song as by the melody.  Recent discoveries include ‘I’m Building Up to an Awful Let-Down’ by Johnny Mercer and Fred Astaire (!), ‘Why Does Love Get in the Way?’ by Noel Coward and ‘Opportunity Please Knock’ by Oscar Brown Junior.  She always tries to include a couple of these numbers in her programmes, alongside more familiar material.

"Good playlist I must say..  Slightly different and definitely varied in styles.
I like that."

(James Hayes, James Hayes Quintet)

Tamsin is a guest vocalist with the Johnny Charles Trio, and a popular returning artist at the Marlborough Jazz Festival, to which she returned for the fifth consecutive year in July 2008.

“As long as Tamsin sings, we will book her.”
(Nick Fogg, Artistic Director Marlborough Jazz Festival)
